We visited the Takayama Festival Exhibition located at Takayama Station, and while the exhibition space itself isn’t especially large, the interior is warm and beautiful. It’s a very comfortable place to step into after exploring around town, with an atmosphere that feels peaceful and cozy.The exhibit is genuinely interesting because it explains the Takayama Festival (Takayama Matsuri), a tradition that dates back centuries and is considered one of Japan’s three most beautiful traditional festivals, alongside Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and the Chichibu Yomatsuri. The festival is held twice a year (in spring around mid-April and in autumn around early October) and is famous for its elaborately decorated festival floats (yatai), which feature intricate woodwork, lacquer, metalwork, and sometimes mechanical puppets known as karakuri ningyo. During the actual festival days, these floats are paraded through the streets and illuminated with lanterns, creating a truly spectacular and cultural experience.Even outside festival season, the exhibition gives a wonderful overview of this tradition and craftsmanship, making it a meaningful stop if you’re curious about Takayama’s cultural heritage.

髙山祭りで、祭りの前に立ち寄った髙山駅通路にある 祭屋台を初めて 見ました。とても華やかで 趣のある場所でした。
