Lena-San is the best host. I had a traditional Tatami room, it was wonderful and very authentic. She provided me with all the information I needed and made a very good breakfast. The evening kitchen round with the other guests was very funny. I was really sorry to leave after just one night. Lena-San speaks very good English. 5/5 would book again!
Really great accomodation for the price. The owner and her mother were very friendly. The bed was so comfy! One of the best nights sleeps I’ve had in this sort of guest house/hostel environment. It is a few minutes walk to the bus stop and the host was very helpful and friendly, providing great suggestions and offering advice about the local area. Would definitely recommend! Thanks again.
The room was nice, the guesthouse cute, the breakfast delicious. An above average Japanese guesthouse experience, until you factor in the hostess, Lena. She catapults the rating past 5 stars. Truly gracious, very friendly, helpful, funny, and kind. I was visiting my daughter in Japan with my mother, and mom was becoming overwhelmed ... until she talked with Lena. Now mom wants to return to Japan, I think just to stay with Lena again. Such a wonderful experience. I usually try not to make repeat visits to the same area so that I can see more of a country, but now I will make an exception. I am sure that on all my future visits, I will somehow factor in a visit to Hakone to this guesthouse.||||Please note - there is a review that I posted on Booking.com concerning room mix-ups. It is for the hotel we stayed in the following night - this would never have happened here, or Lena would have taken care of it immediately if it had. I am trying to get it removed and assigned to the correct hotel (in Yokohama). Please DISREGARD a review from me (Cynthia) discussing room problems if you are considering Guesthouse Nennekoya. You will not be disappointed in your experience here.
We stayed for only one night but still had a fantastic time, enjoying a relaxing time after hiking in the Hakone area. The hosts at Nennekoya are the most friendly we've encountered until now in Japan, very knowledgeable about things to do in the area. They also made us a great breakfast! Would definitely stay there again if we come back to Hakone :)
My friend and I stayed for three nights and we had a great time. At first we thought that the location is a bit far off but after taking a better look at the map we saw that the nearest bus station as well the cable-car station was easily reached by foot. The guesthouse itself is a renovated Japanese house and you can stay either in a Japanese room or in the Western dormitory. My friend and I slept in bunk beds and they could be a bit softer, but I slept more than well enough. There is also a kitchen (and a fridge) and most importantly it was clean and well equipped! As there are not many restaurants near by, it was a perfect chance to cook something. ||Lastly, we really had a great stay because Lena and her mother welcomed us warmly and during the evenings we had a great time. Once we could make shaved ice and together with other guests we lit Japanese firework and talked a lot. It was especially interesting as it was a mix between Western and Asian guests, as well as Japanese travelers. ||Thank you, we had a great stay!
I stayed for 2 nights as Guesthouse Nennekoya and it is probably one of my favorite places I have stayed! Rena-san in incredibly sweet and welcoming and speaks fantastic English! I hope that one day I can return and we can share a hotpot together!|| The guesthouse is clean, with plenty of facilities, and a 3 minute walk from a bus stop on the Togendai Line, so all of the major attractions are easily reached! || Also, ask Rena about her many puzzles, they are lots of fun!
