The staff were really friendly with very good English. Everyone was eager to help with suggestions about food and things to do.Everything was within easy walking distance so the location was perfect. The room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was really nice. Had a Gohei-mochi making experience which was really fun, the site chef/cook that instructed me was really lovely. Between her broken English and my broken Japanese I think we actually understood each other really well, the end product wasn't too bad tasting either.
This is a perfect place to stay! The location, staff and rooms are really top class and made our stay very enjoyable. Hida Furukawa is beautiful, calm and interesting. We would absolutely recommend this company, the staff make everything easy and are very friendly.
Bravo!
We wanted authentic Japanese accommodations. Satoyama Stay.was the perfect choice. From the tasteful, spare design, to the wonderful staff, we would highly recommend this hotel. The rooms are immaculate, covered in tatami mat floors, with modern touches like a comfy queen mattress, AC/heater, Toto toilet and excellent shower. We had a 2nd floor balcony overlooking the quiet courtyard. Street noise was minimal as town closed down early.Breakfast was varied and delicious. They run several activities and cooking classes are one of them. Also, guided hiking and biking tours can be arranged. We had a leisurely ride through the countryside, learned about rice (many fields were being harvested), and along the way had a snack and iced tea.I cannot speak more highly of the staff. Most spoke English pretty well and were eager to help in any way, from calling taxis to arranging activities. It’s a 1-stop shop for tourists.Furukawa itself has an historic street along a canal with gigantic Koi fish that love eating special food you can purchase. The town is small. A 15 minute train ride takes you to the larger town of Takayama, with ancient buildings and many shops and restaurants

A very nice hostel in Hida, Gifu, Japan. The interior is wonderfully built using traditional Japanese architectural techniques. The staff are friendly and English-speaking is OK.

I first learnt about this place from a NHK World programme, Hida: Deep Winter Dive and since then I had been planning to see this place. So I went in late January. The nondescript exterior of what looks like an old townhouse belies a fabulous interior. The friendly staff, Roy who received me made the checking in process so simple and guided me to the room. I was pleasantly surprised to be given an upgrade. Reading through the information provided in the room on how the architects and builders put so much effort into rebuilding this old townhouse, one can apppreciate the fine Japanese craftsmanship that goes into everything in the room including the chairs and doors. The bed and pillow were perfect and the duvet really helped in the cold wintry condition.Furthermore, is an environment friendly place and easily accessible from Hida Furukawa train station as long as roads are not laden with snow. And I had the most restful sleep in my 2 nights there. The lady staff, Miharu san not only did a great breakfast but also offered to give me a lift in her own car to the train station on day of check out since was snowing and I couldn’t get a taxi. After having stayed in so many ryokans/traditional Japanese inns in different parts of Japan, I have to say the stay in this place was refreshing and I no longer have to put up with the aged decoration of most Japanese traditional inns.
