千葉氏の重臣が居城していた巨大城郭で、歴史的な背景が魅力です。
Moriyama Castle was a Japanese castle located in Okaida, Katori City, Chiba Prefecture (formerly Katori County, Shimousa Province). It was built in the early Kamakura period by Azuma Taneyori, son of Chiba Tsunetane, and is believed to have been inhabited by the Azuma clan for generations, though much about its activities during the Middle Ages remains unknown. In the Sengoku period (Tenbun era), Chiba Masatane’s son, Tanetomi, who succeeded the Kaijo clan, moved into Moriyama Castle and made it his residence. However, in 1557 (Koji 3), Tanetomi removed his youngest brother, Chikatane, from power, assumed leadership of the main family, and moved to Honsakura Castle. Aibahara Tanetsugu was then appointed as lord of Moriyama Castle, and the Aibahara clan took over as its lords. Later, Hara Chikamoto, a senior vassal of the Chiba clan, was appointed as lord of the castle, and the Hara clan assumed control. Both the Aibahara and Hara clans served as lords of the castle, but Chiba Tanetomi oversaw much of its development. This likely stemmed from Tanetomi’s recognition of Moriyama Castle’s strategic importance on the border between the Katori and Kaijo districts, making it a key point for controlling eastern Shimousa and facilitating water transportation to Hitachi Province. When the Chiba clan came under the Later Hojo clan’s control, Moriyama Castle effectively became a branch castle of the Later Hojo and also served as a base for the Satomi clan’s northward expansion. After the Battle of Odawara in 1590 (Tensho 18), Moriyama Castle is believed to have been abandoned. However, since Tokugawa Ieyasu’s vassal, Aoyama Narishige, later entered Moriyama and established the Shimousa Iida Domain, some aspects of its abandonment remain unclear. The current castle ruins are thought to date back to the Eiroku and Tensho periods, covering an estimated 620 meters east to west and 430 meters north to south, with three enclosures running from west to east. If Sugayama Castle, considered a secondary castle, is included as part of Moriyama Castle, the size extends to 1,500 meters east to west and 500 meters north to south. The dry moat and earthworks of the main enclosure are said to remain in relatively good condition.Although now located inland due to construction that shifted the Tone River eastward, the castle is believed to have originally stood on a plateau along the Katori Sea or on land connected to a nearby river and lake system.
