As I ascended the gentle slope leading to Choen-ji, a serene temple nestled atop a hill in Chino, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, I couldn’t help but feel a tapestry of history and nature delicately intertwining. The temple grounds, steeped in tranquility, were a prelude to the splendor of autumn I was about to witness.Upon reaching the summit, the sight that unfolded was nothing short of poetic. The fiery red maple leaves, in stark contrast to the temple’s stoic gray facade, seemed to celebrate the season with a vibrant dance. The crisp air carried the subtle scent of incense and the distant sound of a ceremonial chant, anchoring the present moment in centuries of tradition. If you plan to visit Choen-ji, I recommend indulging in the slow pace of temple life. Take time to absorb the intricate details of the Buddhist art pieces, which are as much a feast for the soul as the autumn leaves are for the eyes. A small tip: visit during the weekdays to avoid the crowds, and don’t forget to bring a camera that does justice to the temple’s ethereal beauty. For those seeking more than just visual treats, the temple’s vicinity offers cozy cafés where one can enjoy a local brew while reminiscing about the day’s journey. And for the reflective traveler, a simple sit on the temple’s grounds amidst the falling leaves could be the perfect setting for a meditative pause. In Choen-ji, every step is a verse, every glance a painting, and every breath a story. It’s a place that doesn’t just welcome you; it embraces you with a warm, historical hug. Just remember to tread lightly, both out of respect and to ensure the only thing you leave behind is gratitude.
