My experience with the HidaTakayama River Fishing Guide Service was one of the absolute highlights of my trip to Japan. Sharing the day with my dad made it even more fun and heartfelt as we got to do some father and son bonding. Not only that, but the guide taught me how to fly fish for the first time and introduced us to tenkara technique, a traditional Japanese style of fly fishing that uses a long rod with no reel. It felt hard at first, but the guide is awesome and teaches really well. With his help I was able to grasp the concept super easily and started catching fish in minutes. The fishing itself was incredible. I caught so many fish and the experience was so great that it genuinely felt like I was living out my childhood dream. Plus, the scenery was stunning. Also The guide was super patient, knowledgeable, and took care of us well, and the whole experience felt, exciting, and completely immersive. At one point, I even saw a bear across the river, far enough away to be safe, but close enough that it felt like a once in a lifetime moment. The guide prioritized our safety as we waited for the bear to pass and made sure it didn’t come back with a bear banger. Plus, The guide made sure we were very well equipped to enter the rapid parts of the river. Overall, it was an stellar experience.
Shin is a wonderful teacher, and he knows the area inside out. No matter your skill level he will find the water body suits for you. I am glad I came here and made an angular friend, and this friendship will extend to the foreseen future. CheersAttached a video to show his amazing skills
Ich hatte eine sehr schöne Zeit mit Shinyu.Ich konnte 3 verschiedene Flüsse und 3 verschiedene Salmonidenarten der japanischen Alpen kennenlernen. Ein Traum für jeden Fliegenfischer!Außerdem gab es sehr leckeres Essen und kalte Getränke, was das Angeln noch schöner gemacht hat.Der Guide ist ein Trockenfliegen Profi und seine Fliegen bringen die Fische zum steigen wie keine anderen!Sehr zu empfehlen und gerne wieder.
I went fishing with Shinyu today and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. Initially Shinyu wanted to fish the mainstem of the river, but it was raining very hard and the water was too high, so we went to a small stream instead to target Yamame and Iwana.Shinyu is an expert and is very knowledgeable about the river, fish, and environment. He uses flies that he has hand tied himself, all of which were beautifully made. He showed me how to target the fish the Japanese way, which I greatly appreciated. We had a fun time picking through the stream. The scenery alone is enough to make the day worth it.Once the rain cleared up, we were able to get more action on the surface, and Shinyu helped me catch my first native Japanese trout and char. I ended the day having caught many fish. It was such a fun experience even with the extra challenge of the morning rain.If you are in the area and like to fly fish, book a trip with Shinyu. You won’t regret it!
Fantastic experience fishing with Shin - he tailored our fishing experience for a group age ranging from 1 - 74. Everyone caught fish and had a great time!Shin is an expert angler and considerate guide, providing gear, snacks and drinks. Highlight was catching a golden trout. We will remember the day fondly!!!
Shinyu-san was such a phenomenal guide and a wonderful person to spend the day with. I reached out to him over WhatsApp the day before I (spontaneously) arrived in Takayama, and he promptly responded and fit me into his schedule. He took me all over Takayama to fish the beautiful mountain rivers - it was a proper adventure!! We got into some great fish using the flies he has tied himself.This fishing experience was the highlight of my time in Japan - I would come back just to go fishing here in Takayama again with Shinyu. If you’re on the fence, or want something to do off the beaten path, do yourself a favor and message him to kickstart the best adventure of your entire vacation.It was raining all day and he didn’t let that deter him (nor did it deter me). We explored all over - he obviously has a deep familiarity and knowledge of the area and was able to drive me to multiple different spots where we landed beautiful fish. I couldn’t be happier with this excursion!!
Shinyu was a fantastic guide! We had a great time and caught rainbow, golden trout and a carp!! The weather was cold and rainy, despite that we still had so much fun! he made us feel welcome, provided all the necessary gear including waiters, rods, bait and flies! We communicated through google translate and some through conversation.Note to tourists, river fishing season is closed from October to march, so we fished lakes instead since we fished on October 4th. I’m shocked this is not more of a destination for Americans for fly fishing, the rivers are beautiful and not crowded.I highly recommend this guide service for anyone visiting the area and wanting to fish!
We had an amazing time fishing! We missed the season to river fish so we did lake fishing and had a great time. We caught so many beautiful trout and a large carp. We highly recommend this guide service. Fishing in Takayama is a hidden gem.

Shin is an amazing guide and very knowledgeable of the local waters. He was able to get me on multiple fish in tough conditions. I would recommend anyone who is serious about fly fishing to use him. Cant wait until I can fish here again.
