The Step House is a true vibe--a peaceful refuge on the river, full of creative energy. Toru-San is great host and a better friend; everyday brings new sidequests. You couldn't find a better Hagi homebase.
I had a really great stay at Step House in Hagi. The accommodation was excellent – everything was very clean and well organized, and I felt comfortable from the first day. The location is also very convenient, directly across from Abu River, which makes the surroundings very peaceful and beautiful.The house itself has a very welcoming atmosphere and is a great place to relax, be creative, and meet interesting people. Toru is a very kind and inspiring host who genuinely cares about creating a positive and respectful environment for everyone staying there.During my time here I had many meaningful conversations, enjoyed shared meals, and even had the chance to start a small creative project. It felt like more than just a place to stay – it was a place where people and ideas could come together.I’m very grateful for this experience and would highly recommend staying here to anyone visiting Hagi.

일본 문화를 좋아하시고 느끼고 싶으시다면 여기로 오셔야 됩니다. 사장님이 친절하셔서 먹을것도 주시고 영어도 잘하셔서 의사소통도 원활하고 방도 넓고 다다미 깔려있어서 감성 좋습니다! 심지어 가격도 쌉니다. 일본 오면 꼭 오세요.
사장님이 너무 친절하시고 건물도 이쁘고 아늑해서 다시 오고 싶어요.
하기에와서 저렴한곳을찾다가 스텝하우스를 찾았어요 사장님도 정말 잘해주고 일본집을 싸게 빌릴수있는곳 재미있었어요
We stayed with Toru at StepHouse for 6 days — it was an amazing time and a highlight of our trip. Toru was so open and genuine with his goals and vision for StepHouse—it was very inspirational! Toru takes a very fluid approach to hosting WorkAwayers: if you see something that inspires you around the house, you are welcome to do it!Toru is genuinely using Workaway to contribute positively to the local community of Hagi, and to provide a space for visitors to make what they want of the workaway. His heart and intentions are generous. Come into this with an open mind and a generous attitude and you’ll have a great time.While we were there, Toru showed us a local carpentry studio and took us to a local onsen. George offered to take photos for the carpenter for use on his website , and this ended up being one of George's workaway tasks - taking photos of a craftsman at work. This is a good example of how Toru encourages you to help in any way the community needs.We signed up for a local pottery workshop right around the corner from Toru's. This was another highlight of our trip!We filled our days with creative work designing a porch area and creating a document to help future workawayers be self sufficient. Then we would cycle into town and explore the sites! We had plenty of time to explore.There’s so much to see: pottery studios, very beautiful old preserved homes, sake tasting, museums, a temple. We found Hagi to be one of our favorite places in our two month trip to Japan. Everyone was incredibly kind. It’s a very quiet gentle town, and a great way to see semi rural Japanese life play out.If you are an independent and motivated person with a desire to learn and share, we really recommend stay here !George and Avery

Staying with Toru at Stephouse was a wonderful experience I can only recommend to anyone traveling in this corner of Japan. Toru is a great host, he’s very kind and has become a true friend. He has shown me around the city of Hagi, we went to a local Onsen, cooked together and I got a wonderful experience of the local culture. While Hagi is relatively small and quiet, it’s a really nice contrast to the hustle and bustle of the big Japanese cities and in itself quite beautiful. There is a lot of traditional architecture and a beautiful beach surrounded by green mountains. Stephouse itself is situated right besides a river and is a true refuge of calm and creative energy.I can recommend a stay here wholeheartedly, be that as a home stay or via workaway. I will come back for sure. Thank you Toru!
