I just wrapped up my first trip to Japan. I was all around the country for almost a month and got to stay in a lot of great places - but my stay at the Old Japanese House was by far the highlight of the trip.Between those walls, you can feel the history of the space. The owners - Peter and Sami - will gladly tell you everything you want to know about it down to every detail on how they curated such a beautiful home. Both Peter and Sami are American and speak Japanese (Sami is actually Japanese) which made every conversation super easy for me and my friends. While this is an old and traditional house, it has all the modern comfort you would expect and I would highly recommend spending some time in the bath/ sauna area. Super relaxing.Massive thanks to Peter and Sami for being such gracious hosts, I will be back for sure!
what a amazing place to stay in it was like living in a museum
An unbelievable experience with Pete and Sami. They showed us the most unbelievable time any of us could have ever hoped for. The kindness they shared with us while we were in their home, was unmatched in Japan (and that's saying a lot). There's no question in my mind that we will be back. Do yourself a favor and spend some time in this home. You'll get an authentic taste of Japan with a wonderful couple.
Came here on my second trip to Japan and it’s hands down the best experience I’ve had in Japan. If you want to escape the cities and have an authentic Japanese experience this is the place to do it. Peter and his wife Sami are amazing hosts! Do yourself a favor and come here.
I’ve been to Japan seven times, stayed in a lot of cool places - but this was my favorite. The location is perfect to access the mountains and nature but a quick jump into Osaka if you want to have fun. There’s also incredible restaurants and bars in walking distance. As a female traveler I really appreciated the kindness and comfort of the house and the hosts are fantastic. So well taken care of. Their BATH IS AMAZING! I spent multiple hours in it and probably deprived myself of some sight-seeing 😂. Please come here if you want a great stay and an even better time!
We loved our stay in this beautiful kominka, Peter and Masami were excellent and welcoming hosts. We thoroughly recommend staying here, it was very comfortable, clean, and convenient as well as a really cool experience to stay in such an old and interesting house. We really enjoyed exploring the historic district of Jinaimachi and having a hot bath and comfy futon to retire to. Peter and Masami really show their passion for the house they renovated and know so much about, it's really interesting to hear about it from them and they also gave us lots of great recommendations. If you have any interest at all in Japanese history and culture this is a wonderful place to stay.

Old Japanese House is one of the brightest gems amongst an already abundant treasure trove of history and culture. Tondabayashi’s temple town, Jinaimachi, is a short walk away for centuries of tradition and beauty as if time itself stood in place. Within the historical district are people with an immense love for their craft and their food waiting to be shared with those willing to immerse themselves in unadulterated passion. Peter and Masami are the kindest, most welcoming people we could’ve ever hoped to have met, and that is a privilege in itself. We were welcomed as if the home was our own and left with a deeper love than before for the outer part of Osaka. We will, without a doubt, be returning to the Old Japanese House for the familial feeling that made us fall in love with the country in which it resides. Not only that, but the house also provides ample utility to your stay. A short five minute walk to the train station that will take you from TondaBayashi to Osaka-Abenobashi/Tennoji station provides easy access to the heart of Osaka. Stores like Kirindo, Don Quijote, and Lawson are all within a 5-15 minute walk, not to mention all the goods shops that the wonderful residents themselves all set up and work out of.Peter was more than happy to share knowledge of the Kominka house design and tell of the history behind it, the work and traditional craftsmanship that goes into each one’s construction. Truly, there was a palpable love and appreciation for the cultural and historical significance of his home, and we were truly honored to get to experience such wonders.
