This stay was absolutely incredible. We had such a great time meeting Dani and Evan and the locals. What an incredibly little community. We had great food at Kitsune no Botan booked by Dani and Evan :-)The rooms were so much bigger than we thought. The kitchen was so detailed and super well stocked with ammenties and everything you need for a feast.I didn't know the fridge had teas and coffee available for purchase. Handy! Also cool to see the renovations and upgrades coming along well. So much care taken into everything, what a place to be proud of! Thank you both so much.I need to bring the whole family here next time.
Dani’s renovated guesthouse is wonderful! We loved having the choice between a Western bed and a Japanese-style bedding, and there was plenty of space for us.The location is great — on a quiet street, just a short walk from a grocery store and a couple of restaurants. We were bikepacking around Japan, and Dani was an outstanding host. She provided a helpful list of nearby restaurants with details about each one and even assisted us with making bookings. She also kindly offered us an early check-in when she heard we were cycling in heavy rain that day. I highly recommend this place, whether you’re cycling through the area or traveling with family. We couldn’t have asked for a better stay!
We stayed at Benton Guesthouse for two nights in January 2026. We were cycling the Shimanami and wanted to stay someplace about halfway through to rest for a couple days and explore a tiny bit. Couldn't have made a better decision!Dani and Evan are great hosts, very easy to see how they work together.I've lived in a traditional Japanese house for almost a year now, and we were pretty well-prepared for some of the eccentricities involved. But I'm happy to report that the Benton Guesthouse is well-equipped for any season, probably more so than my own house LOL.If you're considering a stay in the area, book early!Highlights:- Famicom in the tatami mat living room- Artifacts from all over the Shimanami/Shikoku, felt like a museum sometimes- Pre-lined futon made setting up beds a breeze
This is the best place we've stayed in anywhere in Japan, across the many times we've been here. Dani and Evan were fantastic hosts and you can see the love and attention that went into this place. There are knick knacks of the past everywhere. Not just from the Showa era, but of the family that lived here previously. It is spotlessly clean and full of amenities, with excellent WiFi. The hosts also went above and beyond, with excellent communication and arranging dinner reservations on our behalf. We would stay again in a heartbeat. If you're wondering where to stay while doing the Shimanami Kaido, this is the one a thousand times over.
We stayed overnight as a family of 6 (4 adults, 2 teens) as a halfway stop cycling from Onomichi to Imabari. It was the perfect spot and a great authentic house! The hosts were great and organised a reservation at a local seafood restaurant which was an experience in itself, the house was really cosy and plenty of space to leave bikes. And on departure, the nearby Family Mart has a picnic area with great views - excellent for breakfast and to stock up on snacks for the 2nd day of our bike ride.Highly recommend for a quirky and memorable stay!
We loved it!The personal attention was great. Detailed advice and the willingness to call to get us in a restaurant was just top! An amazing old house that has interesting things everywhere you look. Feel and experience the charm! I think it can sleep at least 6.All nice and good and clean!
Had the most amazing night here while cycling Shimanami Kaido. The owner was very kind, showed me around, and was happy to answer all my questions. The house is simply beautiful, with the most wonderful aesthetic, and the Western style bed is super comfy. The bath was lovely, and had just a wonderful night sitting on the tatami and realising a dream come true. Thanks so much for the stay!!
I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a more charming property than the Benton Guesthouse. It’s traditional styled rooms are well appointed and there’s plenty accommodate a long term stay. It’s also close to the Shimanami Kaido bicycling route, if that is in your plans. There are several restaurants within 15 minute walk. The one we went to was a lovely family run place with excellent homestyle cooking. I loved staying here and look forward to coming back.

Fantastic guesthouse. Lovingly restored in a very traditional style. Has two tatami bedrooms and one western bedroom. Tranquil rural location. Fantastic option as a night stop near the halfway point if doing the Shimanami Kaido over two days (or consider spending more time to explore Omishima island more extensively!)
