My partner and I learned of the sea-to-table fishing concept from a youtube video about a year before our trip to Japan and decided we wanted to try and find a way to make this a part of our time in Japan. After weeks of research, I stumbled upon Fishing Life Awaji and reached out to book a boat fishing trip + lunch experience as well as a one-night stay at Captain Daiki's lodge. The experience was amazing. If you're curious about what it's like to fish in Japan, I highly recommend booking some time with Captain Daiki.First, Captain Daiki was very communicative, from the day I booked the reservation (6 months in advance) and in the weeks leading up to our trip. Since we were visiting in winter (late Feb/early March), Daiki wasn't sure the weather would allow for us to fish. Even though it was a very cold morning, Daiki still took us out on the boat in Osaka bay and we caught horse mackerel! We then returned to the lodge and had an incredible fun and even educational time preparing lunch with our freshly caught aji. Daiki even shared some of his favorite recipes with us. The meal was incredible. You'd think it couldn't get any better--but it did. The cabin was very clean, modern, and comfy! The beds were so comfortable, and that was nice after spending a week sleeping on the harder mattresses in Tokyo. I would absolutely rebook this experience and highly recommend this to others! If you do make a reservation, here are some of my tips to help you enjoy your experience:- We decided to stay in Sumoto for the first night on Awaji Island and then stay at Daiki's lodge the night after fishing. We were heading to Osaka the next day, so this route made the most sense especially since we were using public transportation. I wouldn't recommend doing the reverse, but a 2-night stay at the lodge might make sense.- If you don't rent a car, chances are you'll need to catch a bus to Awaji Island from Sannomiya station. There are TWO busses that leave from different bus stops (they are just a 3 minute walk from one another, but in separate building on opposite sides of the road). Give yourself plenty of time before the bus departure so that you are sure to be at the right bus stop before it arrives.- The bus stops near Daiki's lodge are very close (just a 3 minute walk), but the Google Maps location doesn't match where the bus actually stops. It seems they recently renovated and built a new bus stop. Please be aware of this and take the time to look for the bus stop so you don't miss it!- Daiki's lodge is in a more quaint beach town, off the beaten path for foreign tourists. Busses run infrequently, and may be a couple minutes early or late. We were able to visit a nearby town, and that was one of our favorite experiences of the trip!
Had a great time! Even in the winter, the trip was great and we caught a handful of fish. We had sushi with the captain afterwards and it was a phenomenal experience. Very hospitable and tasteful! 5/5
Had an amazing time fishing with Fishing Life Awaji - definitely one of the highlight of my Osaka/Kyoto trip. We headed out early in the morning and were catching some fish (red snippers, flathead) even we’re beginner. After that, we went back for a fresh, delicious lunch that made the whole experience even better.Mr.Daiki was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and made everything smooth and enjoyable.Highly recommend to anyone visiting Osaka or Awaji!
Amazing fishing charter! Daiki Tonda was helpful and kind! Even made sashimi and nigiri with the fish after!!!
Came out from Tokyo to meet up with Daiki-san. I was dreaming about fishing in Awaji for so long and Captain Daiki for sure made my dream come true (and was waaaaaay over my expectations). With his accurate guide, very relaxing lodging experience, the food that Daiki cooks, it’s all top notch and a trip that I would recommend for all fishermen around the world!!
Had a great experience fishing with Fishing Life Awaji--it was the highlight of a first trip to Japan. We caught a few fish right away in the early morning and went back for sushi lunch. Daiki was knowledgeable and kind, and a great guide. Highly recommend!
The best experience I had in Japan by far. Highly recommend.
Very amazing trip! My favorite experience in Japan!
This was one of the most pleasant fishing experiences I have had on a charter boat. Captain Tonga was a very accommodating and friendly fishing guide. We fished multiple spots that day around the Osaka Bay. What a great day of fishing that was. Captain Tonga is also an accomplished chef. He masterfully prepared our catch of the day at the lodge. Could not get any fresher sushi than that. The communication was so easy and pleasant as the Captain spoke fluent English. I learned a lot about the island and local fishing culture. I highly recommend this charter.
