Great ambiance, great music. If you are into jazz, you cannot miss this place. It is not a mere cafe or bar. It is an instutition for jazz in Akita with 10,000 vinyls.

I really really wanted to like Moanin. The reviews are uniformly great and I’ve loved every Japanese jazz bar and cafe I’ve been to. Until now.The good: the master is truly a nice man and welcoming to everyone. He also knows a TON about jazz. He could be a university professor on the subject. The speakers are also excellent. More on that below…Why I didn’t enjoy it: this is not anything like any other jazz bar or cafe I’ve ever been to. “Jazz juku” would be more accurate. When we walked in, we were told that a multi-record set of songs based around an artist (who had passed away last year) was just starting. There were two other completely silent customers in the downstairs listening area. The speakers were so loud that even with earplugs I had a splitting headache within 20 minutes. When my wife went upstairs to try to order something to eat or drink:(a) first we were told that “We only have coffee” despite the menu listed on the webpage. A copy is attached.(b) when she said that I don’t drink coffee (truth) he said “How about tea?” … I thought they only had coffee…(c) while she was trying to order, the other two customers began glaring upstairs at her as if she was disturbing the peace. Perhaps if the volume had not been set at “max”, she could’ve whispered her order rather than speak in a slightly louder than normal voice. Personally, I could NOT hear her over the thunder. The master gave information about the artists between album sides, much like a professor. This was moderately interesting, but again, it was more like attending a lecture or sermon. There was also an information sheet about the day’s listening plan, but (1) it wasn’t listed on the website so we weren’t ready for it, and (2) the font was too small and the room so dark that my middle-aged eyes couldn’t read a word.I had to give up after about 4 album sides. My head hurt too much, and sitting there in silence (which seemed expected based on the other two unsmiling customers) isn’t really my idea of a fun time. The owner really IS a great guy. Some people obviously like this kind of thing. I wish he’d make it clear what the experience was like, as well as the real menu and seat charge (¥500, not ¥300) on the website. This was nothing like even the other to jazz places I went to in Akita (Cat Walk and Rondo), in that you could talk in those places and even quietly enjoy the music. Ok, the music in Rondo is a *little* too loud, but Moanin felt like becoming deaf was a real possibility.I’m really trying to be as fair as possible with this review. It was *not* my kind of jazz experience at all. But… the master means well, tries hard, and seems to have devoted fans, so maybe it will be ok for you. Try to know what you’re getting into. Bring earplugs, just in case.
