The best way to experience Yamadera! Let's be real, can anyone just go up Yamadera on their own? Yes. But to hear the history, insight, and stories of such a culturally significant place? Absolutely priceless. I've been to Yamadera a few times now, but climbing with the Yamaderas was like experiencing a completely different mountain! So thankful for our guide, and everyone in the town if Yamadera who continue to share their beautiful home with the world!
The moment I stood at the base of Risshakuji Temple complex and my guide, Rimiko-san, pulled out a heavy binder chockful of pictures, I knew I had made the right choice booking a tour with Yamadera Tourism Association. They’re led by locals with close ties to the place and community. From the start, it was an easy process to navigate the online booking on the website and Rimiko-san was super responsive with any questions leading up to the day. It’s clear they’re passionate about sharing knowledge of the history and culture of Yamadera – and it’s a breathtaking location. We walked up the 1000 steps – pausing as many times as needed! – and by the time we hit the summit, I had learnt some very interesting and important bits of Buddhist history in Yamadera, and its connection to the rest of the country.I’d like to give a special shout out to my guide Rimiko-san. As a solo traveller, she was so warm, welcoming and witty, and answered all my questions with genuine enthusiasm. She was very generous with her time, conversation and knowledge – just the sweetest! This experience was truly a highlight on my trip to Japan. And the knowledge I gained was something that stuck with me in all my other temple and shrine visits in Japan. If supporting local communities and businesses is something that interests you when you travel, please consider booking a tour with them!P.S. If you’re in Yamadera, also check out Nice Spot Coffee, a coffee shop right near Yamadera station. It’s run by Junko-san who’s spent years living and brewing coffee in Australia. It was a shock to fly in and see a coffee shop belonging in Melbourne at the base of a mountain.
Domo Arigato, Rimiko!!!
Booked tour for a group of 16 where guides were locals with strong English and history! They met us at the station and everything went smoothly.
Our guide spoke perfect English and explained a lot of things on the way up that we wouldn’t have even discovered on our own! Good pace too, highly recommend
We had an incredible experience touring the temple at Yamadera. Our tour guide Kanako was friendly and knowledgeable! Highly recommend this tour!!
We absolutely LOVED this tour. Masako was our guide and was waiting for us as we walked up. She was very knowledgeable, patient as she often repeated herself because we had so many questions, and a great joy to hike with. We picked a day a local school also did, and she was gracious with the dozens of students running through as well as us to make sure we didn't miss anything.
We had a great time with Kanako as our guide when we went to Yamadera in early December. We were a little late, but it was easy to communicate with her over email, and she responds promptly. It’s good to know that most working at the HQ still don’t speak English well, so it might be best to email them and wait for your guide to respond. Was very impressed with the amount of knowledge she had, together with her booklet on hand, and the little additional tidbits of information she shared about Japanese or Buddhist culture. It gave a lot more meaning to the hike, as compared to having just climbed it without understanding - and was helpful for our other shrine visits all over Yamagata prefecture! A must for those who are hoping for a deeper understanding of the history of Yamadera.
Easy and pleasant experience! We were able to learn so much about Rissyakuji and Japan by taking this tour, truly making the experience so much more than just a photo opportunity (although another plus was that our guide Rimiko had the best photo spots and was willing to take pictures of us together). Rimiko was even kind enough to follow up with an email to tell us about a local festival going on during our stay in the area. Thank you for your charm and hospitality!
