We booked both the 箏 (koto - a thirteen stringed harp) and 書道 (shodou - calligraphy) cultural experiences and really enjoyed both.The setting had a very nice and calming atmosphere with a comfortable, traditional-style room with tatami mats. The host was friendly, polite and caring; she guided us through the activities with professionalism and patience. She spoke some English and used a digital translator device, when needed, for any complex sentences, which meant the language barrier was minimal.For the harp experience we practiced a song individually and then played it together once we had mastered it. There were very useful visual aids to guide you through it, even if you don’t have any prior music experience.For the calligraphy, the host asked us what kanji we would like to draw and we chose the animals which are represented by our names. She created an example for us, with a guide for the stroke order, and we practiced for a while before doing a final version which we decorated on cardboard and took home as a nice souvenir.All of the above meant we really enjoyed ourselves and came away feeling that we’d had a memorable experience and had been well taken care of throughout. I really recommend booking some experiences if you want to experience first hand traditional Japanese arts.
