Authentic matcha experience with a professional geiko in a beautiful house near the river. Learned about different matcha cultivars and the ceremony. Perfect experience.
Really beautiful experience, quiet, away from crowds, very informative, and I recommend thus highly!
Both Eri (guide) and Ruriko (host/ former Geisha) were very graceful and informative and we had a beautiful tea ceremony experience.
Incredible! Eri our guide and translator was so knowledgeable and friendly. We took a tour of a local tea farm and then had the most amazing matcha tea tasting and tea ceremony with Ruriko, a former Geiko. Learning about her story and tasting tea with her along with Eri was one of our most memorable experiences in Japan! We had the opportunity to even perform the ceremony for ourselves. They also gave us a lot of recommendations for Uji and there is definitely a lot to see.
My wife and I had a really great experience with our English translator and guide, Eri, and our traditional Japanese tea ceremony leader, who was a former Maiko. The experience begins with a walk through the town to the tea house, during which Eri gave us a lot of information about Uji, tea ceremonies, and Japanese life in general. They took such great care in helping my wife select a kimono for herself and took photos throughout the event to help us remember the occasion! Our leader was extremely graceful in leading us through the ceremony and we got to see how much care and intention was placed into making the tea. At the end, we received two coasters, lovingly made from the leader’s grandmother’s kimono— this was a deeply touching and personal touch. We were both really blown away by the whole experience. We’re also happy to have done the experience in Uji, which is the matcha capital of the world, and also hosts many cultural sites like Byodo-in. We wouldn’t have visited were it not for this experience! We would wholeheartedly recommend.
My daughter (13) and I both love matcha. We wanted to find a tea ceremony that wasn't kitschy or commercialized. When I read that this was a private experience with a retired geiko I had high hopes, but even my expectations fell short. Eri, our guide/translator is an aficionado of matcha, and thus has educated herself on the history, farming, and strains in the area (much like a wine sommelier, though she will deny the title). Normally we would have a small tour of Uji, but due to the rain we went straight to the beautiful house along the riverwalk and spent extra time chatting with Eri and Ruriko. Our elegant host was incredibly gracious and made sure we were warm and dry while conversing with us, sharing details of her fascinating life. The tea ceremony itself is beautiful, and I could think of no one better to show us and teach us than a geisha with decades of experience. Eri and Ruriko even gave us directions on some great spots to buy the matcha we liked best (we tasted 4 varieties during our time) and some other shopping. It was one of the highlights of our trip, and also got us down to Uji, which we would have bypassed otherwise and missed out on what became our favorite city during the trip.
We spent two wonderful hours with Ruriko and Eri, starting with a pickup at Uji station before a peaceful walk to a local tea plantation, where Eri walked us through the entire tea-making process with genuine passion and expertise. We then made our way to Ruriko’s home for a tea tasting and a traditional tea ceremony that felt completely authentic — not curated for tourists, but lived-in and real. What sets this experience apart is the people behind it. Ruriko’s personal story is remarkable, and the warmth both she and Eri bring to every moment makes you feel like a welcomed guest rather than a visitor on a schedule. You step into a quieter, more contemplative world — one that stays with you long after you leave Uji.If you’re looking for something that goes beyond sightseeing and connects you to Japanese culture on a genuinely human level, this is it. We will absolutely be back. Highly, highly recommended.
The ceremony was so peaceful and a very complete experience. The house is original and a very calmed space. Eri, Ruriko and her daughter, Sumire, hosted us and were very welcoming.
This has been the most amazing tea ceremony with a great guide. Eri was super informative and knew everything about the surroundings. We absolutely loved our experience.

Fantastic experience. We went there with my husband and 14 month old, they even had toys for her to play with. The experience started with a look at one matcha tea field, so fragrant we could smell it from the street. Our guide Eri told the story of tea and matcha in Japan, and answered all our questions and more about cultural impact, and how Japanese enjoy matcha today. The tea ceremony at the house was as interesting as it was interactive, we got to mix the tea ourselves and then taste three different kinds and try to map the flavours. We got a sweet treat at the end, so delicious! We also got to see a traditional tea ceremony performed by the geiko (geisha). The ladies were super kind and our daughter loved the time there. I recommend anyone staying in the Kyoto area to stop by Uji, the home of matcha, and experience this unique look into a piece of Japanese history. Thank you for having us!
