Honguyama or Mount Hongu is Oomoto's central sacred mountain. Oomoto's most important central temple was located on the summit of this hill, and its founder Nao Deguchi proclaimed that Ayabe would be the world's new Jerusalem. However, it was destroyed by the authorities during the 1930s due to the suppression of various religious movements. Some stone blocks from the destroyed temple can still be found scattered around the top of the mountain.
