Jan 12, 2026Didn’t expect to write a cemetery review but the plaques and monuments about actress Yumeji Tsukioka and director Umetsugu Inoue caught my attention when I walked by the cemetery in this neighborhood. It was super close to all the houses nearby, and it didn’t feel like a scary or isolated cemetery at all.I first noticed a bench raised higher than the ground, then I realized it was facing the glass monument. The plaques were even written in English in detail. I thought they were just famous artists and didn’t know they were spouses.I made a loop around the cemetery hoping to find the moon-shaped statue until I realized it was erected in Hiroshima, her hometown instead; she also starred in a movie of the same name.I hadn’t heard of this couple on the classic Japanese film screen before but now I’m intrigued and I might watch one of their prolific works if I have a chance.
