This place felt like home. It was the perfect place to begin and end each of ours days visiting the sites in Atami. My husband and I began our day sitting in the sun room attached to our bedroom upstairs enjoying the sounds of birds. We easily prepared our breakfast in the modern well equipped kitchen before heading out to explore the beach, shopping street, museum and Plum Garden. The shower and onsen was the perfect way to relax before climbing into the very comfortable futons.I enjoyed examining the the carpentry displayed in the structure of the house, the unique doors and and carved decor. The garden was an adventure with interesting niches and paths.
We stayed at the lovely traditional villa, Atami Garden, in mid March of this year. We are a family of three and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The villa was a traditional wooden structure but had undergone a full renovation. It was spacious with delicate woodwork filigree throughout the living room area. The garden was a welcome respite from the town. I found that it was conducive to meditation. There were three tatami bedrooms with 2 bathrooms. Best of all was the private onsen. We looked forward to a hot soak after a day of exploring the Izu peninsula. The kitchen was newly renovated with all modern appliances, stove, microwave, dishwasher and a capacious refrigerator. The villa is ideal for groups or families who want to experience a ”Minka, a traditional Japanese home” that has all the modern amenities. The town and train station is only 20 minutes away. It is only an hour from Tokyo via the Shinkansen. Atami is a wonderful seaside town with extraordinary seafood restaurants. It is a welcome change of pace from the frenetic Japanese cities. I highly recommend this villa for families or a group friends traveling together. I would happily return to the Atami Garden if I had the chance.
We spent two wonderful nights in Atami. Everything about the home was exceptional; the 1936 architectural structure and layout offered us a true sense of local Japanese life. We were deeply moved by the design and thoughtful details—the tasteful furniture, the collection of Isamu Noguchi and vintage lamps, and the record player. The kitchen is well-equipped with tableware, cookware, a coffee machine, and dishwasher. The bathing experience was also a highlight; the bathtub was comfortable, and all the towels, yukatas, tatami, and bedding were impeccably clean. Our favorite part was the courtyard. It features ancient trees, vibrant moss, and different kind of plants. Waking up to the sound of birds and the scent of fresh grass was magical. What a love place! we definately want to visit and stay again!
We did the inaugural stay at Atami gardens house in February and the stay was wonderful. Only a short shinkensen (1 hr) ride from tokyo, Atami was a restful retreat with its own onsen and great outdoor garden. The vibe was decidedly retro but modern bathrooms and kitchen made the stay enjoyable. Don’t miss the opportunity to stay Atami Gardens
Obsessed with this private villa on the Izu Peninsula. I picked it because I was looking for an authentic stay in Japan that’s not a hotel, and it’s truly perfect. I’ve visited the Izu area a lot, and this gorgeous home blew me away. From the tile in the bathroom to the super soft bedding, I felt completely restored and at peace in my surroundings. It’s for sure the best place to stay in Atami.I love to cook, and appreciated how thoughtfully designed the kitchen is. Enjoying a morning coffee overlooking the garden was paradise. One afternoon we took a walk to Kinomiya Shrine, and got a piece of cheesecake at Tsubuan Saryo, a charming cafe near the house. And every evening we had so much fun exploring and listening to their wonderful record collection. It’s a boutique stay in Japan for the design-conscious traveler. Or really anyone who loves tradition, nature, attention to detail, culture, the works!Another plus was that it’s easy to access from the train station and only an hour from Tokyo. I can’t wait to go back and see Atami Garden in another season ❤️
Shizuoka is one of my favourite places to escape the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. Atami is so easily accessible, only 1 hour from Tokyo, its perfect for weekend getaways or even longer.Adored my time at The Layer: Atami Garden - this absolutely gorgeous Traditional 1930s Japanese Kominka stay that's been wonderfully renovated and restored.Honestly, I didn't want to leave - you have a private garden villa rental all to yourself - with an amazing indoor onsen with beautiful green tiles, comfy cozy tatami rooms, a dining room, a spacious living room and relaxing engawa spaces - it just inspires the imagination to move to Japan.Utterly feels like home, a pleasant walk to all of what Atami has to offer but making you feel like you're a local.I was so lucky that during my stay, had a beautiful blue sky day where I got to see plum blossoms and early cherry blossoms then the next a rare heavy snow day in Atami - so literally experience two stunning seasons in one trip. (see photos)Would love to return, to just go there and write and read ^_^
We stayed here as a couple after I ran the Tokyo Marathon, and it was exactly what we needed—one of the most peaceful, restorative places we’ve experienced in Japan. The traditional Japanese house strikes a beautiful balance between history and quiet luxury, with so many great details for lighting, decor, dishware choices. The light throughout the day is stunning. We loved easy mornings in the sunroom; its view of the garden it felt almost meditative. The garden itself is very private, with a stone bridge over an old stream, maple trees, and birds chirping. The onsen bath was a highlight. The tiles and hinoki wood are beautiful, and the dual sinks in the dressing room were convenient. There's gorgeous original woodwork, warm textures, and a cozy living room that glows in the evenings. Upstairs, the tatami rooms are peaceful, with persimmon dye fusuma paper with the prettiest bamboo woodblock print. It’s not just a place to stay—it’s a place to truly unwind and recover.

We loved our stay at the Atami Garden Villa, a relaxing, peaceful, vintage Japanese style home with tatami mats, shoji screens and updated amenities. It was comfy and homey, yet elegant, artistic and well -crafted with cool artwork and mid-century modern furniture. The private onsen was amazing! So convenient to soak any time of day. The futons were extremely high quality and comfy. Most memorable were listening to sounds of birds in the morning, views of the garden and having our morning cup of coffee in the sun room. Using GOTaxi app was a great way to go to town. We plan to come back again to this special home in Atami.
