결론부터 말씀드리면 강력 추천드리고, advanced5를 intensive로 1달 수강했습니다. 혹시 또 오실 한국인분들이 계실 수 있을 것 같아 이러저러한 장점과 팁을 남깁니다.(1) 수업 구성이 체계적이고(특정 레벨 이상부터는 자체 교재를 사용하는 것 같아요), 중요한 건 선생님들이 말을 많이 시키십니다. 그냥 설명하고 넘어가는 게 아니고 단어나 문법 설명하실때도 (선생님 총 네 분을 만났지만) 이해한지 확인하기 의해 늘 예문을 만들어보게 하신다든지, 수업 시작 전에 일상의 공유를 한다든지 그런 과정 속에서 계속 일본어로 말하기 위해 끊임없이 생각하게 되어서 좋았습니다. 추가로 반마다 다르겠지만 자체 교재로 뉴스리스닝도 연습했는데 도움이 많이 되었습니다. ann이나 nhk 유튜브 찾아보시면 나오는 영상 정도의 난이도에요. / (2) 근데 이게 10명 20명 넘어가는 클래스면 말할 기회가 적겠죠? 하지만 coto는 소수 정예 시스템이라 아마 6명인가 8명인가 이하로 반이 구성이 됩니다. 저는 원래 4명반이었는데 어쩌다보니 요런저런 사유로 2명이서 수업을 듣기도 했습니다만 ㅎㅎ 소수정예로 수업이 이루어져서 단순히 수업만 듣는게 아니라 끊임없이 말을 계속 해야하는 부분이 참 좋습니다. / (3) 국적 구성이 다양하고 영미권이 특히 많습니다. 차별의 의도는 없지만 중국분들이 많은 학원에서는 쉬는 시간에도 중국어만 들리는 어학원도 있다고 들었어요.... 여기는 그런 건 전혀 없어서 좋았고.. 반대로 단점이라면 서양분들이 한자나 한자어를 많이 모르시는 경우가 있어서(예컨대 폐지, 납입, 흥행, 조회, 가결, 산하, 출하, 쇄도, 시효 같이 서양분들처럼 백지에서 배우라 했으면 힘들었겠지만 한자를 살짝만 알아도 대충 무슨 단어인지 뉘앙스를 알게되는 단어들?..) 약간 서양식 일본어 발음을 하는 학우들이 있어서 리스닝이 힘들 때가 있긴 합니다. 그래도 저는 서양권 분들이 많은 게 더 좋았어요. 아예 새로운 언어를 배우시다보니 최대한 일본어로 말하려고 하시니까요. 서양식 일본어 발음(?)도 사실 굳이 단점이 아닌게 토익도 요즘 호주식 영어 발음도 시험에 나오곤 하는데, 일본에서도 사실 서양사람들이 일본어를 말하는 걸 듣게 되는 상황이 적지 않습니다. 피할 수 없으면 즐겨야겠죠? 저 같은 경우는 일본에서 미사를 드리기도 해서 특히나 그런 발음을 많이 들었었어요.. 외국인 신부 분들이 일본어로 말씀하시는 경우가 많았어서요. 여하간 서양식 일본발음(?)을 접하게 될 상황도 적지 않아서.. 이런 것들도 나름 경험이라 생각하고 하면 또 도움이 됩니다.수업 와 activity는 coffee chat과 hang out이 있는데(무료), 중급 이상이시면 커피챗하는게 도움이 많이될 것 같아요. 레벨에 따라서 대화할 팀을 구성을 해줘서요. Hang out은 보드게임 같이 좀 더 쉬운 방법으로 도움을 주는 건데 초급자인 분들께 도움이 많이 될 것 같습니다.(저는 오히려 게임판에 한자가 없고 다 히라가나로 써있어서 더 안읽히더라구요.)저는 경험하지 못하고 가지만 2월에는 시부야 지점에서 이자까야에서 한잔 하고 친목 다지는 행사도 하고 그런가봐요(이건 무료 아니고 살짝 금액 부담하더라구요). 시간 맞으시면 꼭 참가해보시면 좋겠습니다. :)참고로 지금은 시부야, 이다바시 지점이 있는데 coto가 워낙 호평이고 운영이 잘 되어서 그런지 조만간 신주쿠 지점도 오픈한다고 들었습니다.! 일본 어학원 가볼까 고민하는 분들 계시면 고민 마시고 한번 와보세요~~

My experience at this language school was disappointing. Teacher quality varied tremendously, and they do not offer levels beyond Advanced 5, which is frustrating for students seeking more challenging material.A few students wanted to continue to a higher-level course, but the proposed fee was 3,700 yen per person — roughly $75 per hour for the three of us. Mind you, this was for 2 hours a day, 5 days a week, amounting to $150 for every 2-hour session. This fee is extortionate and unjustifiable for a group lesson. What are they, neurosurgeons?The cancellation/refund policy is terrible — essentially, there are no refunds at all. I wanted to buy a 15-session package instead of a single class, so I asked to be refunded for the trial class for the Super Advanced Class and apply that payment to the package. They refused — though in hindsight I’m glad they did, since the class turned out to be disappointing.During the trial class, there was a replacement teacher, and I had to wait until 9:15–9:20 for the class to start because two students were late (we were only three), yet the class still ended at the scheduled time, wasting both our time and money.Additionally, during Friday presentations, feedback was generally very minimal, limited to “well done.” After putting in time and effort preparing my presentation, I would have appreciated more detailed, constructive feedback.Another serious limitation: if you don’t use the package and want to transfer to an online lesson, you can only audit the class — no feedback, no questions, nothing. This makes the online option practically useless for serious learners.Overall, I cannot recommend this school for serious learners who expect consistent teaching, proper feedback, fair pricing, or respect for their time.

I'd give more than five stars if I could, especially considering how hard this school has worked with us and our shifting needs. My husband and I did our first three months (B1, B2, B3) at the Shibuya location due to full-class issues, but then shifted to the Idabashi location as it was closer to our home.For B4, we tried to study the material ourselves at home. For B5, we requested a private teacher at Idabashi. Not long into the private lessons, I had to return alone to the US for health issues, and when that looked to stretch on longer than expected, Coto suggested that join my husband and the teacher for the lesson via Zoom. This had been working well while I'm dealing with everything back in the States.Coto's educational regime is rigorous and has given us a very solid foundation. But more than that, their staff are kind and willing to work with you as much as possible to help you get the most out of your experience. Can't recommend them enough.

I did extensive research on which Japanese school was the best in Tokyo, and without a shadow of a doubt, Coto is an absolutely stunning program!! The teachers are passionate, the classes are small, and I learned so much. I was quite sad to leave and would have loved to do a two year program with them. Coto was an awesome place to study Japanese!They make learning fun and have a great system. I really enjoyed how we added new kanji each day and did quizzes each week.The teachers are wonderful people and genuinely invested in your success. What's more, if you go on the outings with them, they help you improve your Japanese out of the classroom too!Coto is a stylish place with a good vibe and you will not regret your time with them. I studied at Coto Academy for just one month doing the crash course, and even in those four weeks I learned a lot. The teachers were very nice and very helpful with anything. I wish there were a bit more activities (I could not afford the ski trip), but the existing amount was very reasonable. Would love to come study here again when/if I move to Japan full-time. Would definitely recommend!

I attended Coto Language Academy for about 7 months. I moved to Tokyo from Los Angeles for my husband's work and had to learn Japanese quickly.
