花宗堰の特徴
花宗堰は矢部川と花宗川の交点に位置し、歴史を感じる場所です。
立花宗茂が築いた人工水路は、地域の重要な交通路でした。
静かな自然に囲まれ、まるでジブリ映画の世界にいるような散策が楽しめます。
花宗神社の傍、花宗川と矢部川の交点傍に鎮座している祠。通常見かける水神社の位置と構図が違っていて、目を引き足を止めてしまった。
初めて見た人にとっては当たり前じゃない懐かしい景色。
写真の赤橋の右奥に、料亭のような家があり、そこに住んでいたことがあります。懐かしい景色。たまたま見つけて驚きました。

🌿 Hanamune Weir (花宗堰) + Yabe River Walk — A Hidden Historic Spot in ChikugoOn my way back after visiting my aunt’s house in Yame City, I took a peaceful walk around Hanamune Weir (花宗堰) in Tsuno-e (津之江), Chikugo area, along the beautiful Yabe River (矢部川).A local resident told me that this weir marks the branching point where an artificial canal was created from the Yabe River. This canal is believed to have been built by Tachibana Muneshige (立花宗茂), a famous samurai / warlord who was active in the 16th-century Sengoku period. Today, this historic canal is known as the Hanamune River (花宗川).What makes this place fascinating is its role in local history:the canal stretches about 23 km, and instead of flowing into the Ariake Sea, it connects to the Chikugo River (筑後川)—making it an important transportation route in the past. Long ago, it supported river transport of timber and mountain products from the Oku-Yame area (Yabe Village, Kurogi, Joyo, etc.). After the construction of the Hyugami Dam (1953), the canal also became important as an agricultural water supply for the region.Because of this canal system, the Yanagawa domain developed as a water-rich castle town, and nearby Okawa grew into a famous furniture city, supported by timber transported from the mountains.This is not a major tourist attraction, but it’s a quiet, nostalgic, nature-rich spot with a calm rural atmosphere. Walking along the river here honestly felt like stepping into a Ghibli movie — peaceful, timeless, and beautifully Japanese 🌿✨📍 Recommended for: people who enjoy local history, riverside walks, and hidden countryside gems in Fukuoka / Kyushu.
