京都府立植物園的牡丹園（牡丹・芍藥園）位於園區東側，緊鄰竹笹區，展示約160種牡丹與110種芍藥，多達160株牡丹、330株芍藥，展現色彩繽紛、花型多樣的春之盛宴。牡丹原產於中國，曾作藥用，明治時代引入日本，後來轉為觀賞植物，園內栽培有松葉牡丹、春日山、華鳳等珍品，花徑可達20–30 cm，被譽為「百花之王」 。花期一般為4月中旬至5月上旬，若氣候較暖有時提前開花，園方也配合舉辦牡丹展，讓人近距離欣賞大輪牡丹的雍容與典雅。春末來此漫步，既能沉醉於花香，又可透過多樣品種認識牡丹文化，適合攝影與賞花愛好者。
