A historical landmark. Here is written on the board:“Hanasaki Inari-jinja Shrine”This shrine was where Matsunaga Teitoku, who served as secretary to Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later became known as the father of haikai poetry, conducted aceremonial transfer of the deities from the Five Shrines of Mitsumine in the grounds of his residence. His residence was known as "Hanasaki" (blossoming flowers) at the time, and that became the name of the shrine. The five tutelary deities are Uka-no-Mitama-no-Kami (a god of rice and crops), Susano'o-no-Mikoto (one of the gods of the Plain of High Heaven),Oichi-Hime-no-Mikoto (the goddess of markets), Onamuchi-no-Kami (a god living on Earth), and Sarutahiko Saisin (the god of roads). Five statues of these gods used tobe housed in the shrine, but are currently kept at the Kyoto National Museum.Teitoku was also known as the Old Man of Hanasaki and the Old Man of Gojo Avenue, and, thanks to a dream sent by the gods, he offered up this poem: / beseechthe gods of the Three Great Shrines Ise, Iwashimizu-Hachimangu, and Kamo] that the path of haikai poetry will flourish, just as the blossoms have bloomed in theseshrines for ten thousand generations past and future. This shrine was worshipped by people from ages past for its abilities to perform miracles, the powers of its gods the most august and highest rank of all. In 1715,when the Imperial Princess Yasonomiya Yoshiko, daughter of Cloistered Emperor Reigen, was married to the seventh shogun Tokugawa letsugu, and in 1861, whenImperial Princess Kazunomiya Chikako, daughter of Emperor Komi, was married to the fourteenth shogun Tokugawa lemochi, rituals to offer prayers for safe birth werecarried out at this shrine. These events helped increase the number of believers, and the grounds were constantly filled with pilgrims.A local fire 1897 spared the shrine, leading to it being nicknamed "the unburned Inari." In July 2011, another suspicious fire in the area singed the fence, but did nofurther damage. In 1907, Hasegawa Buemon was given the shrine by Omichi Rain (Kazuichi), the Chief Editor of the Kyoto Branch of the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun and the HinodeShimbun (now the Kyoto Shimbun) newspapers. Buemon made his wide Oto the chief priestess, and the Hasegawa family has been responsible for rites here to thisday. The autumn shrine festival is held on the fourth Sunday in November each year,Kyoto City“”
