I had a fantastic experience at this Kintsugi workshop in Osaka! It was the perfect start to my trip. Jo is incredibly knowledgeable and created such a friendly, warm atmosphere that made learning easy. He even treated our mini-group to a special tea ceremony! I also loved the venue itself—a beautifully renovated former storage space that added so much character to the session. The upper floor is a store filled with unique authentic handmade pieces. Jo lets one choose a piece of chinaware for repair. Mine turned out very beautiful. The workshop uses traditional method, so it takes time for your piece to cure - and it can be shipped to your hotel or collected several days later, so keep this in mind when booking. The workshop set the mood to my overall experience in Japan, so whether you starting your trip or ending it in Osaka, don't hesitate to choose this experience. I don't give high score lightly but this one well deserved
We had a great time with Jo-san on the Kintsugi workshop! We spent almost two hours with him, during which we learnt about the story and process of kintsugi, as well as followed his expert guidance to fix two plates. He did share some matcha with us, as well as some pointers on how to make it at home, as his was significantly better what I usually make! As we had to leave town shortly thereafter, he sent those to us in Spain and they arrived promptly and without issue, perfectly packaged.Absolutely recommended to anyone who wants to learn and have a terrific time!!
Absolutely amazing experience! I was looking for places to buy Kintsugi and then came across Zenkei and luckily was able to book a workshop. Josuke is extremely knowledgable and made our group feel comfortable and relaxed, truly going beyond what we expected. I cannot recommend enough, my experience with Zenkei taught me more about Japanese culture than just a particular craft, and it inspired me to continue Kintsugi upon returning home.
I was looking where to get antique potteries in Namba and I came upon Zenkei on google maps. When I saw that there was a Kintsugi workshop, I had to do it ! I tried my luck and got a place for the next day, in english. On the day of, Josuke, the artist/teacher/owner, was waiting for me in front of his shop, which was easy enough to find. I loved this experience so much, def a highlight of my entire trip to Japan !! Josuke offered me ice tea and we then proceeded to the teaching. I learned a lot not just about the beautiful technique of kintsugi, but also about its roots in Japan history and philosophy. After I completed the gold powder applying step, Josuke taught me how to make matcha, and then showed me upstairs where old and new potteries were for sale. The gold powder has to cure for a few days, so he arranged a shipping to the nearest post office to the airbnb I was going to be staying at in Tokyo. If you stay at a hotel, he can ship it there instead of a post office. Pickup went very smoothly !Josuke offers his workshop to tourists and locals, so if you have broken something at home, he can help you give it a second life :) If you like authenticity and learning about art and history, I can’t recommend this workshop enough !
I found this kintsugi class thanks to a Google maps search. I went to the website and there was a form to email and ask for the class reservation. I sent an email the day before and thankfully, there was space! Jo replied quickly and since this was last minute, I appreciated him.I was in Osaka station and didn't realize that the taxis that wait at the hotel were not available, so I had to call one. Unfortunately it would make me late so I emailed Jo to let him know. Thankfully I was not too late, just 5 min late but as my taxi was pulling up, I saw Jo waiting outside the building looking for me! I couldn't believe it! I was glad I emailed to let him know. There were three other people in the class and they were waiting for me. Be on time or early, folks!Jo was a really great host and instructor! He has been studying kintsugi for years (at least a decade!) and trained with masters in Kyoto. I love his beliefs about why kintsugi is important and it made the class feel very important and valuable to learn.Kintsugi class is 2 hrs and it went by quick! I was surprised! That's how immersed I was in Jo's teaching. Kintsugi is a long process and this class covers the steps towards the end but you learn about the rest of the process as well. Because I want to go kintsugi to fix my own broken dishes, I made sure to ask Jo for more details on certain steps and he answered with the detail I was looking for.The plates in the class are antiques that you get to apply kintsugi to! What a treat to find out we are working with wares from the Meiji and Showa era!! The class is a great foundation to begin exploring doing kintsugi on your own which I now feel confident I can begin practicing.Jo also has a shop and I bought a beautiful small wooden and natural urushin lacquer cup with a beautiful design at the bottom of the cup that he said took him 3 months to make. While we were taking the class, he passed around two wooden bowls made of Japanese cedar and urushin lacquer as examples. I loved the bowls and asked if one was for sale - he said yes, so I bought it! He offered to inscribe my name on it and ship it to me with the plate I worked on. I appreciate beautiful craftsmanship and will treasure these wares.

Participated a Kintsugi workshop which was very enjoyable and informative experience. The owner gave a presentation of history and process of Kintsugi repairing and we then got the chance to participate in the process of mending a ceramic. We were also provide with matcha tea which we got make ourselves. The owner is very passionate about Kintsugi and enjoys teaching people about the history of Kintsugi.
