Nice small shrine with good view from mountain above the shrine. The god Hitomaru is Kakimoto Hitomaru, the most prominent poet contributing to the 8th century book of ten thousand leaves (Man'yōshū) and was brought to Yamaguchi during a period of infectious disease. Since there is a pun on the poet's name, which means person circle, and "stop fire", Hitomaru is also thought to protect against house fires, and for reasons I am unaware of, promotes safe birth. Hitomaru is primarily enshrined at perhaps the famous shrine in Japan: that of Itsukushima Island near Hiroshima with its iconic shrine gate standing in the bay. There is a good view of Yamaguchi City from the mountain above this Hitomaru shrine in North Yamaguchi City. The road to the shrine and to the top of the mountain above is mainly concrete but there are some short gravel sections. To get to a point where there is a really good view, turn off to the right of the road just before the top up a mountain path. I was wearing cycling shoes so I did venture off the road. Thanks to Hirokochi for informing me about the view in his review.
