Such a nice pottery studio and the class was so fun. It was our first pottery class and we learned a lot in a very relaxed atmosphere.
People come here from all over the world to learn pottery.It’s not just about learning ceramics, you also get to interact with local residents and enjoy nearby Japanese sweets shops, retro cafés, and izakayas.The teachers are highly skilled and very kind.During breaks, you can relax around the irori (traditional hearth), enjoying sweets and good conversation with other guests.During your stay, you can visit shops to purchase unique, traditional Japanese pottery tools.You can even hold a tea ceremony using the matcha bowls you made yourself and try wearing a kimono, too!
They teach you all you need to know about throwing, trimming and firing of porcelain. Sensei has a wealth of knowledge but you need to ask for it

I traveled from the United States to study at HoCA in Tajimi, and it became one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.Studying with Setsuro Shibata was an extraordinary privilege. His technical knowledge, decades of experience, and deep connection to the traditions of Mino ware make him an exceptional teacher. He has a remarkable ability to recognize exactly what each student needs to improve while creating an environment that encourages confidence, curiosity, and continual growth.The instruction balanced thoughtful guidance with hours of self-directed practice, allowing techniques to become genuine skills rather than simply demonstrations to imitate. That approach transformed my throwing. I arrived intimidated by porcelain and left able to confidently throw clean, well-formed cylinders—the essential foundation for mastering nearly every wheel-thrown form.HoCA is far more than a pottery studio. I was introduced to the history and culture of Japanese ceramics through visits to neighboring pottery towns, museums, and historic climbing kilns. I was also unexpectedly invited to participate in a mountainside raku firing, which was one of the most exciting and inspiring experiences of my life. I fell in love with raku and can’t wait to continue exploring it.The atmosphere at HoCA is truly special. Chiharu-sensei welcomed me with such warmth and kindness that I immediately felt at home. I was included in birthday celebrations and even invited to share meals with friends and family—gestures of generosity that I’ll never forget.Whether you are a beginner or an experienced potter, HoCA offers something incredibly rare: world-class instruction, authentic cultural immersion, and genuine hospitality.
