Our stay here was one of the highlights of our trip. A truly beautiful space to stay, lovely quiet village surrounded by trees and rivers. It’s a unique experience and makes a great change from hotels. Highly recommend to include this in your trip.
Merveilleux séjour à Akitsu. Chambre magnifique et chaleureuse. Bravo à Nikita pour cette chambre d’hotes plus coffee shop en pleine campagne, pas loin du Lac Biwa à environ 1h de Kyoto.

When we needed a minute to slow down, Akitsu is where we found our respite. A beautifully designed guesthouse above an equally thoughtful cafe and store, both run by Nikita. We came across the stay through word of mouth, looking for a special experience during our time in Japan. Everything in the guesthouse was handcrafted by Nikita herself - the highlight being the bathtub made from Hinoki wood. You slip easily into the rhythm of the village, nestling into a good book and falling into a deep slumber until you eventually wake up to the sound of the nearby stream and the birds singing. Nikita has these beautiful Tokyo bikes available for you to use and explore the neighbouring trout farm or the next village which the Nakasendo trail passes through. We even ventured on a small hike through the forest and for those with more time there’s a 6 hour trail.Highly highly recommend! A beautiful experience created with so much consideration and care. What Nikita has made has left us inspired and rejuvenated and we look forward to coming back.
This is our second stay at Akitsu Ryokan and the best accommodation we've stayed at in Japan. It is located in a quiet neighborhood where you can truly disconnect. After a couple of busy nights in the city this feels like a real sanctuary. The room is comfortable and thoughtfully designed. Underneath the guesthouse is a curated shop with local ceramics and gifts as well as delicious coffee. Nikita the guesthouse owner speaks english and Japanese and can help you with local recommendations. In the local area of Maibara, Hikone and Nagahama you can explore many incredible restaurants, cafes, temples, gardens and authentic and quiet places away from the busyness and overcrowded nature of the popular cities. If you're looking for a true getaway and genuine Japanese experience this guesthouse is a must!
We loved our stay at Akitsu! The owner Nikita has done an amazing job renovating the space without sacrificing its traditional charm and feel (including a luxurious hinoki bath!). The location is breathtaking, and we enjoyed our walks around the village and surrounding hills. The close proximity to the Shinkansen station made it easy to access, and I would highly recommend it to anyone to spend a few quiet days in the Japanese countryside!
My fiancé and I recently stayed in the Akitsu guesthouse for a few days and it was one of the highlights of our 2 week Japan trip. The owner, Nikita, was an incredible host, giving us great recommendations for things to do and making our stay so lovely. We had breakfast and some of the best coffee I’ve had in the shop below the guesthouse each morning and spent some time talking with Nikita. The guesthouse is stunning with tatami flooring, a futon that’s almost too cozy to get out of in the morning, a great nook if you are working remotely or need a desk space, and an extremely relaxing bath, making the space so comfortable and welcoming. Kaminyu is a beautiful countryside village and the locals are all very friendly. Nikita provided two bikes so we got to ride around the village and into the town for dinner and browsing the local shops. We hiked nearby and enjoyed the river and mountain views. We couldn’t recommend staying at Akitsu enough or even just stopping by the shop for some of the best coffee you could have, some artisan goods, and great conversation. Definitely worth the trip and can’t wait until we can go back!

We discovered Nikita’s beautiful Ryokan via Scott Brown’s YouTube channel and we are so glad that we finally could come and stay. The Ryokan is absolutely gorgeous, as is the location. All the attention to detail in the fit off is evidenced via the material choices and high quality details. All amenities are clean and comfortable and the bathtub is such a delight with an amazing aroma from the timber. We stayed 3 nights and next time we will stay at least 4 as it is truly an incredible area to stay in and slow down away from the busy cities.Nikita was an excellent host who was kind and accomodating with yummy breakfast each morning alongside coffee. She has lots of recommendations of things to see and do in the area and we were also lucky enough to see the fireflies just nearby at the trout farm! (Mid June)Cannot recommend it enough to come stay here experience this. We will be back!Thank you so much Nikita!
